Environmental Monitoring

Ongoing monitoring is important to understanding the impact of pollution in the Greenways.

The trees of each of the greenways can absorb and store carbon which improves the air quality of our county. Our storm drains and waterways are often negatively affected by non-point and direct-point pollution from garbage, chemicals, sediment, and other contaminants. This can affect the water quality for aquatic organisms like darters and the opportunities for swimming and fishing.

Air Monitoring

PurpleAir monitors are currently installed at Ruffner Mountain and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve. These monitors are part of a community science initiative to collect and share air quality data with the public. Check out the map and see real-time air quality data for our monitors and find another monitor near you.

Water Monitoring

For many years, Anne Matthews has collected water samples from Turkey Creek and uploaded results to Alabama Water Watch. Use the link below to view results from these water tests of the Creek as well as other AL sites. *Water monitors will be installed later in 2025 to help monitor Turkey Creek flow, sediment, etc.
